The Women’s Canadian Club of Calgary
Dr. Martha Hart is a highly respected philanthropist, author, researcher, and advocate, known for her transformative work through The Owen Hart Foundation (OHF), which she founded in 2000. The foundation has raised nearly $5 million and supports thousands of individuals and families through programs that include scholarships, housing assistance, food security initiatives, holiday support for veterans and families, and the annual OHF Backpack Giveaway, which has equipped more than 11,000 children with school supplies.
Her academic work is equally impactful. Dr. Hart earned her PhD in Social and Developmental Psychology from Cambridge University and is a long-standing researcher at the University of Calgary. She co-created the internationally recognized ATTACH™ program, a parenting and child-development intervention backed by multimillion-dollar funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and international grants, including a €1 million award to expand the program in Denmark. ATTACH™ is now implemented in multiple countries and has been acknowledged by Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child.
Dr. Hart is also a leading voice for safety reform in professional sports, advocating for accountability following the tragic loss of her husband, Owen Hart. Her efforts in philanthropy, academic research, and public advocacy have earned her numerous awards, including the AFP Individual Philanthropist of the Year, the Alberta Centennial Medal, and the Global Impact Award from Women of Inspiration.
Through her work, Dr. Hart has made a lasting contribution to vulnerable communities locally and globally, while enriching Calgary’s cultural landscape by bringing world-class performers to the city through OHF fundraising events.
