A pioneer in women’s hockey, Dr. Bennion helped establish the women’s varsity hockey program at UBC in 1994. She initially served as its coach before joining the team as a player, and her contribution to the development of women’s hockey earned her induction into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Dr. Bennion has built a diverse medical career encompassing family medicine, low-risk obstetrics, and sports medicine. She has taught family medicine residents and international medical graduates and has worked extensively with elite female hockey players. Her sports-medicine experience has included serving as a team physician for the Calgary Inferno and working with Hockey Canada’s national women’s hockey programs.

Her approach to medicine reflects her own experience as an athlete. She is a strong advocate for the principle of “Exercise is Medicine” recognizing physical activity as an important tool in preventing and managing chronic disease and promoting overall health. Her clinical interests also include the intersection of sports medicine, pregnancy, and women’s health.

Today, Dr. Bennion continues to practise in Calgary, combining her work in family medicine with sports medicine and her longstanding involvement in hockey. Her career reflects a distinctive combination of clinical expertise, athletic experience, teaching, and leadership in women’s sport.
