Ms. Fortney’s career began as an early interest in writing and grew into a broad body of work spanning journalism, essays, magazine editing, speech-writing, and personal storytelling. Ms. Fortney is known for her thoughtful writing about people, relationships, family life, and the experiences that shape Canadian communities.
She has worked as a senior columnist and writer with the Calgary Herald, was the founding Editor of Avenue Magazine, and has written books, including her first book, Sunray: the Death and Life of Captain Nichola Goddard which was published in 2010. This book profiles the life of Forward Observation Officer Captain Goddard, who earned a tragic place in Canadian history on May 17, 2006 when she became the first female Canadian soldier to die in combat since WWII while serving in Afghanistan.
